India :

No women will ask for it!

If you are a women making your way through a faceless crowd of shoppers, loiters, time-passers, jobless men, on the street, you could receive a range of unwelcome forms of attention from groping, to bottom pinching, being brushed against to an obscene gesture or even at times partially getting nude. Sounds familiar?

All collective designated Street Sexual Harassment (SSH), or eve teasing. A young girl, thinks it is to miss the point completely when people say a women’s outfit provoked the man’s behavior.{ My question to the same people – Which outfit when worn, be it a Sari, Salwar Kameez, Skirt or Pant by women are spared by this harassment?}

No women will ask for it!

Almost every woman has encountered street sexual harassment. It could be verbal, physical, or emotional and definitely can affect her in many ways. Most of us are taught to be meek-we duck and walk away if someone misbehaves. Thus the more serious offences like groping, grabbing, fondling don’t get the required reaction. Street interventions at Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad have had positive results when women stare back at men who stare or harass them. Public places are for both Men and women, and a woman has the right to lounge and chill out without appearing to be ‘Available’.

No women will ask for it!

Every year this kind of criminal act’s is increasing and there is no proper law or action is shown against it. India, Delhi tops the list with the largest number of crimes against women. Followed by AP and looks like Bangalore now competing to the first place. 18 cases were reported under Sec 509 IPC and 8 cases under Sec 354 IPC for the year 2006. A total of 26 cases of ‘Eve teasing’. Only few filed by the police themselves around the colleges in Bangalore City, where they inspected and took action against some ‘eve teasers’.

According to the criminal lawyer, complaints of such cases of SSH are few since women still suffer the stigma of being ‘objectified’ as having loose morals. So, most of the cases are settled are settled within the police station – the offender apologizes to the lady, is thrashed or sent off with a warning. Later, the same culprit is quite comfortable repeating the same act.

Ritu, a collegian says she had never noticed so many eyes staring at her till she actually looked back at them. She now found herself getting more comfortable in her own space after the experience. The most vulnerable of us gets hit the first since we can be spotted easily. By improving our body language in public, we can keep eve teasers at bay. What if there is an unpleasant encounter in the night, with few women around? “Confrontation is not recommended all the time.

No women will ask for it!

Here anger should be used as a strategy and not in impulse. If she has a mobile phone, she could dial for help. Or depending on the situation, walk to a place that has more people or call the police, if she thinks it is too unsafe – it really depends on the situation” says a working professional and trained on self-defence.

SSH has, no doubt, become a very common practice and, sadly enough, goes unchecked in spite of its severe criminal nature.I guess 90% of this criminal practice never gets reported, in our part of the world, and the victim continues to suffer in silence.Veils or jeans, nothing is safe. What good can be expected of a society where law enforcers, in uniform, on roads, are adept in this vile art of eve teasing.

I’d, here, really like to have comments from men as to what brings their gender to indulge into SSH and what behavior from women can keep them safer against it.

Good post Anusha! A subject that needs to be sorted out, finally.

A simple and sober behavior of women can prevent such incidents to happen. It’s a harsh reality that girls do provoke the boys for such acts.

So where is this fantasy world of yours where 90% of men are being sexually harassed?

When poled, 90 to 95% of women had been subject to eve teasing. Every newspaper in the world has done articles on the outrageous amount of street harassment of women.

If so many women are filing FAKE cases, how were there so few cases filed last year? Were all fakes and no actual harassment is going on? Then why are there so many videos and news reports of it happening?

Sharing the experience of this gentleman.Only to tell you what’s going on in our society. In other words, the other less discussed shades.I am not posting as an counter argument but only to shed light as where are we heading towards :

***********************************

Before I started writing this post, I wanted to name it ’Eve Teasing’. However, to my surprise, here is the Wikipedia definition of Eve Teasing -

”Eve teasing is a euphemism used in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan for sexual harassment or molestation of women by men.”

What? Its a euphemism only in the sub continent? No way! Moreover, the more important part is to notice the victim here - women.

Being from Delhi, I have been often involved in discussions on how the rape capital of India houses ill mannered males. Worse, much of the lesser harassments every day on the streets of Delhi goes unreported and unopposed. I used the term ’eve teasing’ as a casual reference to sexual harassment in its oral form from both sexes.

Until last night.

Walking towards our car parked a few blocks from Adams Morgan, (read my previous experiences here from the summer of ’06), the five of us were having a good time at 3 AM on a Friday night. Amongst the gang were four college friends from 3 cities and 2 countries meeting after a long time.

”Haaaaaayyyy!!!”

The shout of a woman from somewhere across the street broke the string of Ma-Behen curse words floating for a long time. As I turned to look around, a big SUV with tinted glasses was crawling parallel to us. Inside it were 4-5 girls in their early twenties - all dressed nicely in party clothes.

”Haaay you guys, I love you all so much. I loooooooooove Indian guys. You guys are ALLLLLL f***ing virgins. I want to de-virginize you tonight. You wanna come with me tonight? I’ll eat you like a chocolate....”

In the volleys of ’We love you too baby’ cries going back and forth, something struck me for the first time. I had just been a victim of Adam Teasing (Yes, there is a Wiki word for it). It was sickening. I mean honestly, I don’t mind dirty talking after being drunk. But more importantly, I have always been on the giving end all my life. The girls left within a minute or so but I knew that I had lost something right then and there - my oft spoken ”Jiyo Maal Jiyo R**** Jiyo C*****i” anthem (my demeaning reaction on seeing a ’beautiful’ girl - note change in lingo :D ).

I could never imagine how disgusting it could be to be ’eaten’ by some stranger. I somewhat knew that the fastest reproducing racial group on this planet could be seen as sexually deprived. To top it all, I was sure that 4 out of the 5 of us were virgins.

since 90% of women are sexually harassed, it is only equality if 90% of men are sexually harassed...right? You want in on your share the victimhood, you don’t want to be left out of the attention, right?

Well show me where an amount of men, equal to the amount of women are being victimized and not just 1 or 2 isolated incidences, and I might feel sorry for you.

@Arvind,

That article had nothing to do with India, it was in Washington DC, USA, which also has the highest crime rate in the nation and he went to a sleazy part of town. He knew exactly what he was getting into... because this was in one of his previous posts....

”””The most recent was was this last Saturday. Four of us headed towards Adam’s Morgan in the heart of DC. Since I had come to this region, I was filled up with stories about this drunkard’s paradise.”””

DRUNKARD’S PARADISE!!!He heard the stories and wanted to go, he did go

Don’t act like there are no red light districts in India either, there are prostitute districts in every country.

”””my inhibitions on shooting off glances to the stereotyped ’horny american bitches’ was gone.”””

He was looking for trouble and he found it. Why are you surprised at that?

”””I mean honestly, I don’t mind dirty talking after being drunk. But more importantly, I have always been on the giving end all my life.”””

See that...he had ALWAYS been on the giving end of the harassment. He didn’t have respect for women, but he is shocked to find they have no respect for him?

Did you read the comments?

You could have said that you were not interested in any ’pre-owned stuff’.

”Jiyo Maal Jiyo R**** Jiyo C*****i” ...I remember that!!! :D
@fuzzy: Its tough to find new stuff which has not yet been owned ever.

OWNED???? OWNED???? DID THEY SAY OWNED????? HUMMMMM! Now with that kind of attitude towards women, do you see why they have no trouble treating women badly on the sidewalks in broad daylight?

I do feel badly for him though, even if he chose to go to a bad part of town, late at night, drunk..... Those um ladies (I use the term loosely) were uncouth and were drunk and disorderly, all they had to do was call the cops and they would have been picked up.

Yes,such gestures are distasteful. The aggressive stance of girls can ward off the eve teasers.

However, you cannot ignore the changes that have hit the society. What about the conditionings created day and night by so many sources that treat women no better than sex object?

You also cannot deny the fact that dress one wears speaks lot about one’s personality. If women are so bothered about eve teasing what’s make them wear revealing clothes ?

I do agree woman of our times are facing lot of problems. However,it’s time to realize that times have changed.Every age gives rise to peculiar set of problems.

Have you witnessed ragging sessions ?Girls too participate in them and force the boys to perform all sorts of indecent acts. They too also indulge in immoral and indecent gestures on road.

I am not trying to lessen the intensity of problems faced by women. But it would be nothing short of hypocrisy if I ignore that women have become hypersensitive. They know that a little tact combined with aggressive stance can save them from such gestures.Still they create a tamasha.

So learn to handle such unwanted acts with smarter use of brains.

Sometimes back on IB I read a wonderful observation by an American lady wherein she has stated that most of us take it as a compliment when someone says ”Sexy” to them.

The other way to react is to become angry and think of beating blue and black the person who said it.This is cent percent an Indian girl’s standard response. If that’s the case, they are still trapped in worn out methods of women of ancient times. The evolved women will react like an American lady.

Receive it with smile instead of creating ”halla” or astonishing mess.

And yes, please don’t understand I am trying to endorse the acts of eve teasers.I am also not diluting the pain felt by the women.I am just trying to view the issue from an evolved perspective.

Even if the woman was wearing a bikini in the middle of the city, it still means nothing, you are responsible for your behavior no matter what. Only you can control your own behavior, no one else.

It rarely ever happens in America because American women walk up straight and tall, shoulders back and proud, we look people in the eye and we don’t look afraid. We have attitude! Men don’t mess with us. If men do it, give them the stone cold stare!!! Men also know that they might get sprayed with pepper spray or shocked with a Tazer if they mess with us.

Don’t let the men lie to you either, they will try to tell you that Western women like it, they also spread the lie women like being raped too. Never take it as a compliment, because it is never a compliment it is always an insult.

The reason it is happening is because of the women’s movement, they think if they can scare you enough, you will crawl back into the house and cook their dinner and wash their socks. It happened here too. It will pass, you just have to be strong.

Another rubbish from you. Oh yes, you are right. It is this same pushing by men that is causing 94% of deaths of men in wars and in the course of duties. Unlike earlier times, women can afford to work outside as the dangers from nature has completely vanished and man-made machinery is available. As long as there were no machines and danger from nature was high, men were asked to work and provide for women. Now, with that having gone women want to compete and control men. And guys like you conveniently forget that part. Its betrayal of men and it is insult to injury! Babies? Yes, we become cry babies when we point out to this discrepancy. So much for your intolerance. This is a deliberate twist to what I have stated and this shows the intention of feminists to avoid all responsibilities for their rights. When did I say that women deserve to be raped, either in burkha or in bikinis? I am advocating responsibilities for women for their freedom and I am quoting the distress men have to face when they encounter show-offs from women. Nowhere did I say that women deserve to be raped. But feminists want to avoid the question of responsibility and hence twist facts.

Western men die some five years earlier than women. They suffer more from nearly every medical disease and ailment that there is. And yet, far more money is spent by governments on women’s health than on men’s health. Men are also nowadays educationally disadvantaged significantly compared to women; with the curriculum, the teaching methods and the resources being designed to cater far more for women and girls than for men and boys. Men make up 80% of the homeless. There are more of them in social service care-homes as boys. They are many times more likely to be wrongfully arrested, wrongfully imprisoned, mugged, assaulted or murdered. They are 5 times more likely to lose their children when families break down, 4 times more likely to lose their homes, 4 times more likely to commit suicide, 20 times more likely to be killed or injured at work, 20 times more likely to be imprisoned, and, probably, more than 100 times more likely to be demeaned, denigrated and ridiculed by the mainstream media. Men also pay much more in taxes than women but receive far less in benefits from the government. In other words, when compared to women, men are significantly disadvantaged when it comes to their health, their lifespans, their homes, their children, their education, their families, the tax burden, the law, the benefit system, and even when it comes to their own personal safety. They are nowadays also being heavily discriminated against in the work place. How is it possible, therefore, that women are being ’oppressed’ more than men? In what areas? Where?

Men are more likely to be macho showoffs and not go to the doctor when they need to and take risks that they don’t have to because they are hard headed, not because of anything women do.

Men will jump in a tank of sharks or in front of a herd of charging bulls to show how brave they are, women not so much. That is their choice, no one makes them do foolish things.

As far as taxes, I don’t know about India, but nowhere on our documents do we even indicate gender or race, everyone pays the same percentage. Those who make more money pay more tax, simple as that. So if you pay a woman less than you pay a man, of course she will pay less tax.

”Men will jump in a tank of sharks or in front of a herd of charging bulls to show how brave they are, women not so much. That is their choice, no one makes them do foolish things.”

This is because society and women don’t want men to be liberated. Women want men to be in the medieval ages, protetcing and providing women, chivalrous to women and yet want women to be modern and liberated. It is the same society and women who want men to face danger and wars, rescue in natural calamities etc. while women and feminists would never ask for equality there. There is no other reason why in all wars, 94% of deaths of soldiers are of men. In some wars, all 100% is of men. Its the same with all rescue operations. Women want cosy jobs alone. and send the men for all the dangerous jobs. So, LIBERATE THE MEN. THEY ARE OPPRESSED!

This is not as simple as being expressed. Sometimes, the men are alone at fault. Sometimes, women are also at fault. I have seen plenty of women dress up very provocatively and show off their legs, breasts etc. Can you expect the men to be like monks when they do it? The best way to prevent a crime is by not creating situations that manifest them. Now, feminists do not want this to happen as this would affect the business of women’s rights and of feminists.

They are called Rednecks, lowbrow, uneducated, filthy, raciest, highly religious, abusive and clinging on to a brutal past. The believe that a woman’s place in in the house, having babies, waiting on men hand and foot and keeping their stupid mouths shut...or they are likely to get a fist in it.

REAL men are the exact opposite of these knuckledraggers. They are secure enough in their manhood to not have to demean a woman just to feel like a man.

Not really. Even the educated men are slowly realising the game played out by feminazis. Its just rights without resonsibilities! 50% of couples in America just live-in and are not married because marriage is a great risk for men. Men are scared of getting married. Its happening in India too as the marriage laws favour women.

”REAL men are the exact opposite of these knuckledraggers. They are secure enough in their manhood to not have to demean a woman just to feel like a man.”

The real goons and knuckledraggers are the feminists who are playing games. The real men understand these games and don’t fall prey to them. Manhood is not about falling prey to feminism. Nor is it about demeaning women. Its about standing for self-respect and rights of men. Feminists like you are feeling threatened as men are back!

”Are there rednecks in India too?”

There are female goons for sure and many men are waking up.

I dare you to deny that the religious fanatics in this country are the ones who are doing all the warmongering!!!!!!

Their so called ”spiritual ideology” is to kill and bomb and make war all over the world in case you haven’t noticed!!!!!

I deny it outright! Its not the religious fanatics who are invading other countries. It is not they who waged a war against Iraq. Its the oil lobby, the Contractors lobby, Arms lobby combined with arrogance of power of the American elite that started the invasion. Religious fanatics may be a minority in the west. Nothing works without the support and need for mega bucks.

”Their so called ”spiritual ideology” is to kill and bomb and make war all over the world in case you haven’t noticed!!!!!”

The minority of religious fanatics are not powerful enough to do that. Its the oil lobby, corporate lobby, contractors lobby, arms lobby to name a few who fund the political parties and call the shots behind the U.S. govts that started this war against Iraq.

Obviously, the majority of Americans are not this way. And you haven’t given me the direct answer to my question. I said, the lobbies are behind the wars. Its not the Christian right wing groups. It takes a lot of money to wage a war. Nothing can happen without enormous funding.

You just don’t get it…there are 2 parties…the conservative, Republican Party and the Liberal democrat party,

The conservatives are the religious Christian party made up of almost all rich white men. They own everything; they have all the money because they used their religion to crush anyone who stands in their way. George Bush and Dick Cheney belong to this group.

The Liberals are the rest of America, the blacks, the poor, the woman, the gays, the recent immigrants, anyone who has been disenfranchised by the conservatives. This is the group that president Obama belongs to.

Hi all,

This article was not written to create a ”DEBATE” or mail fight.

I have not mentioned that ”ALL” male category/specie is born to do eveteasing.

I have mentioned some, that means it could be 50 or 80 percent. I am not pointing all the male category is culprit. It is not a necessary or mandatory if a girl is wearing short skirt or deep neck, she should be teased. It happens to every girl, no matter what she is wearing and this is based on my personal experience.

Thank you for all those who supported.

You are missing the point. I agree with you that even Burkha clad women can be raped. But does that mean that all women can walk naked and expect nothing to happen? Does that mean that people can sport all kinds of jewellery and expect nothing to happen? What is the responsibility of women? You are only talking about what men should do or what they should not do. What about women? There is no unfettered freedom for anybody including women. So, do your part instead of pointing fingures at others. If you do your part, your position would become stronger than the way it is now. You are asking for unfettered freedom. Its impractical and it is also a violation of men’s rights. Its beyond eve teasing and rape. It is about responsibility of women.

I have seen enough women showing off their cleavage, legs, asses etc. on the roads. The reason is obvious. They want to show-off and get the perverse pleasure of making guys drool and suffer. Taking responsibilities for one’s actions cannot be termed primitive or 3rd grade. The real 3rd grade and 3rd class mentality is of feminists like you who want women to have rights and no responsibilities. When did responsibility become 3rd grade? Good point. The mistake you have committed is that you have made crime gender specific. The brutalities you have highlighted should be taken as a crime. No need to tell you that there are many preventive measures to stop the crime. It’s one thing to intercept factors that gave rise to such crime. But it’s quite another to frame foolish conclusions and spew venom against men community only because a women too is involved.

The commentators like you are so prejudiced and bogged down by your limited understanding that instead of discussing the issues from all wide angles, the only thing you do is to shed tears how the women community is suffering at the hands of men ?

The closed minds like you should not participate in any debate.Because if a boat carrying women gets capsized, the likes of you will simply arrive at conclusion that it was the fault of men community that made boat and boatman off course.

In other words, there are many things that lead to crime. But I don’t think that prejudiced ladies like you can ever intercept them .You people can only understand that all male are beasts, forgetting that likes of Ekta are here in the world because of such beasts !!

Only bitches advocate rights without responsibilities. Only they can say ”women have the right to walk around in whatever dress they like and can still expect nothing to happen. If men get aroused, it is their problem. Men’s rights are men’s problem. Women’s rights are society’s problem. Can it get more absurd than this?

Just because women in burkhas too get raped does not mean that women can behave irresponsibily. Its like saying, ”Even banks are looted. So, let me keep my door opened and sleep all night. Let me be as irresponsible as I can and expect nothing to happen”.

You line of thinking shows what it means to ask for rights alone with no responsibilities.

Why should women dress well? Because of the following reasons: 1. Its part of civilized culture. 2 Its about their own safety. 3. Its about men’s rights not to get sexually aroused.

Freedom comes with responsibilities. Women’s rights ends where men’s rights begin.

The pattern adopted by the girls in Washington DC has already been adopted by Indian girls as well.In global world,it would be naive to assume that anything happening in Washington cannot be replicated in Delhi or Mumbai. The lose behavior visible in girls there is now natural for Indian girls as well.Druken girls smoking cigratte etc. can easily be spotted anywhere in India!!! If eve-teasing is a global phenomenon, how can adam teasing remain a local phenomenon ?

***********************************

Campus Eye-Openers. Inevitably, one pale male at last week’s seminar countered with a charge of Adam-teasing. Complaining of the girls’ gauzy saris, low-cut cholis (blouses) and flimsy salwar (trousers), a student cried: ”There is always too much visible.” Conceded a Lucknow University coed: ”At times we also tease boys.” And for sheer devilish ingenuity, few Eve-teasers could match the New Delhi girl who telephones males at random, starting conversations that are hard for many an innocent husband to explain. If a wife answers, this Adam-teaser hangs up with the shocked cry: ”He never told me he was married!”

Women have been wearing saris and traditional Indian tops and pants for thousands of years, I even wear them and have been since the 60s, it was never a problem.

That might have happened in 1960 but it will not happen today because all phones have caller ID. In the 60s, every teenager made prank calls because that is when private lines were installed. Before that all phones had party line and your neighbors could listen in on your calls.

Instead of taking note of ”typical Indian male mentality”, please be more bothered about the mentality that prevails in U.S. making it the country where highest number of rapes are committed.

We are a developing country in eyes of you people. Our ignorance, our poverty ,our uncultured behavior, our chauvinistic tendencies, our bad governance and our flawed investigative mechanism etc. might be the reason behind crime against women but tell me why your land-the land of most progressive tendencies in league with hi-tech investigative agencies -witnesses highest number of rapes?

Another feature of mentality that governs U.S.

” The use of drugs seems to be a feature of more affluent countries. The U.S., which has been driving much of the world’s drug research and drug policy agenda, stands out with higher levels of use of alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis, despite punitive illegal drug policies, as well as (in many U.S. states), a higher minimum legal alcohol drinking age than many comparable developed countries,”

Alcohol was by far the most common substance used, the researchers found in their face-to-face interviews with people.

”Alcohol use by age 15 years was far more common in European countries than in the Middle East and Africa,” they wrote.

By the age of 21, up to 99 percent of Europeans, 92 percent of Japanese, 94 percent of New Zealanders and 93 percent of people in the Americas had tasted alcohol.

”Estimates were lower in the Middle East and Africa (40 percent to 63 percent)” the researchers wrote.

”In the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and New Zealand, more than 60 percent of young people had started to drink by age 15 years,” they added.

”These findings add to our understanding of substance abuse world-wide, and suggest that drug use is still a major problem in this country, pointing to the need for more effective prevention interventions,” U.S. National Institutes of Health director Dr. Elias Zerhouni added in a statement.

I don’t have any prejudices against men, I love men, I am married to one and I gave birth to one and almost all of my friends are men...as a matter of fact my best friend in college was a guy from Bangalore, he was nothing like you however.

When he was in college in America, he did not have a hateful bone in his body, he loved and helped everyone even when some of the locals were not so nice to him. That is when I stood up and fought for him, I could because I was in my element and he was not.

Whenever anyone doubted my abilities, he stood up and fought for me.

I knew how to get his paperwork to stay in the country in order and he taught me to use computers.

We hung out in the arcade and lunch together in the quad, we gave each other moral support.

Then together we found other international students to help with that horrendous paperwork and then those guys taught me more about computers...until I could write basic code for video games.

College is a very liberal place...far from the stereotypical, brainwashed, conservative agenda. I fit right in there, I am a granola munching, tree hugging, sari wearing, very liberal, hippy!

So don’t be offended if I laugh every time you call me a feminist.

Question to Rohan and Arvind....

If you were in charge of making laws in your country, what rights would you allow women?

Please be clear and give details.

@Nuya,

I would the choice to decide between tradition and modernity to the people. Once they would decide on that, the next course of action would be taken. Today, there is utter confusion between modernity and tradition brought about by feminazis. If the people decide on tradition, the laws would mandate a different role for men and women, different behaviour and in short, men and women would not be competitors but play a complimentary role. Men would get some priviliges and some negatives. Same with women. If the people decide on modernity and equality, it means that both men and women get the same responsibilities and rights, unlike as it stands today where women have only rights and no responsibilities. Feminists sleep with tradition at night and kick it during day for their convenienece. You can’t have it both ways. Pay the price of equality!

Voting implies a referendum.

Traditional society implies the differentiation of roles, behaviour etc. as it used to be in earlier times. The roles would be different based on the biological, psychological and anatomical differences, as against the concept of equality. This concept of equality is being used by feminists to discriminate men. Women should STOP misusing the power given to them and the advantages of tradition and modernity.

@Nuya,

”what rights did women have in earlier times?

This shows the stupidity and deliberate ignorance of feminists. This is the foundation of the feminist movement, a foundation on falsehood and on female victimhood.

Traditional societies had men and women perform different roles. At a time when the society was struggling and providing and protecting was not easy, and at a time when there were no machines and survival was not easy, men were made to struggle outside, bring home food and protect their women. This struggle by the men was rewarded and men were the Heads of families. On the other hand, women were made to take care of the house and look after the kids. Women were given a strict code of conduct and in return were given moral superiority over men. IN those days of struggle, women were well protected from the dangers and vagaries of nature. Men were the sacrificial goat! Women were and are still sympathised much more than men.

Now, with machines available and threat from nature having receded, women want equality. Equality in parts! Not as a whole as they want to take advantages of tradition and modernity. Women, in earlier times, got away with doing the lighter work of tending to the house.

So, this is broadly what I mean by a traditional society. Men had some priviliges and duties, women had their share of both. Feminists are conveniently denying this fact and want to portray women as ”Victims” eternally!

The feminist sirens remained quiet. For the victim is a man
By Kevin Meyers
Tuesday May 05 2009

http://www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/kevin-myers/the-feminist-sirens-remained-quiet-for-the-victim-is-a-man-1728418.html

There seems to be no empathy, no regard, no compassion for male victims.

And the case of Michael Hannon is particularly shocking

I looked, and of course, I looked in vain, for some sign of compassion for Michael Feichin Hannon, from our state-supported feminist quangos. I shouldn’t have been surprised about their silence over the grave injustice done to him: yet some small stupid part of me had retained the naïve hope that there might be some sign of ordinary human decency from our professional gender-industry.

Gender self-pity is now so deeply ingrained in the political psyche of the institutions of this State that it is apparently quite invisible to those who run them. We have lived in a political regime with a one-way rage for two decades now; and like the vegetation on a wind-blasted island, the landscape of our public morality has been utterly distorted by it. We have created a state-subsidised chorus of feminist sirens which only howls when it sees the cases that confirm that women alone are the victims of endless oppression. Naturally, the sirens — and their colleagues in the media — resolutely ignore those cases which provide contradictory evidence.

Now, a few weeks ago I was confident that the various state-subsidised feminist quangos — from the Rape Crisis Centres, to the National Council of Women, to the Equality Authority — would say nothing about the preposterously light sentence of seven years for the serial rape of a 14-year-old boy by his mother, and I was right. The fact that the judge was a woman was no doubt a factor in their silence. Her explanation for the light sentence — that the Edwardian law was more heavily biased against paternal incest was both tendentious and spurious: for the charge of sexual assault alone carries a maximum of 14 years’ imprisonment.

It’s possible that I missed some condemnation of the sentence by the vast army of feminist-commentato rs and feminist quangos: but if I did, it wasn’t for want of trying. But imagine the outcry — and very properly — if a man who had raped and sexually abused his 14-year-old daughter was sentenced to just seven years’ imprisonment by a male judge.

What troubles me most about these feminist institutions, and the feminists who run them — not all of them women by any means — is the double standards which are now a norm. There seems to be no empathy, no regard, no compassion for male victims. So the case of Michael Hannon is particularly shocking, not merely because it could so easily happen again, but because of the lack of outcry resulting from it. Twelve years ago this innocent young man was framed by a malicious 10-year-old girl, Una Hardester, and duly found guilty of assault and sexual assault. His life could have been ruined. That it wasn’t was because his family believed in his innocence.

That same year, three young Irish soldiers on holiday in Cyprus were similarly accused by an Irish girl. Only 15 hours later, after the men had been arrested on charges of rape, and under questioning from a detective who doubted her allegations, did the accuser break down and admit that her claims were baseless. She was sentenced to four months imprisonment.

Cue, outcry from Irish feminists, not over the attempt by a young Irishwoman to use the proper loathing for the crime of rape to ruin the lives of three innocent men, but because she was imprisoned at all. Condemning the jail sentence, Olive Braiden of the Rape Crisis Centre, said it would deter rape victims from reporting cases, and anyway, there was more to this case ”than met the eye”: whatever that cheap slur might mean. Anne O’Donnell, formerly of the Rape Crisis Centre, similarly dismissed the seriousness of the false allegations of rape, and, briefly appointing herself as both judge and jury in some hypothetical Cypriot court, declared that the woman’s word alone would never have been enough to have secured a rape conviction. Ah. So that’s all right then.

Fast forward to the Hannon case. Racked with guilt, Una Hardester returned from the US nearly three years ago to admit to her false allegations. Her sworn statement was known to An Garda Siochana and the office of the Director Public Prosecutions. But, quite scandalously, it was never passed to Michael Hannon’s solicitor. Michael only discovered its existence purely by chance, after his sister encountered Hardester at a petrol station. Thus, no petrol, no justice. And it gets worse. For this state then flatly refused to declare that a miscarriage had been done. Michael Hannon, having once been the victim of the law, was then obliged to return to the courts to fight for a certificate of miscarriage of justice, which the Court of Appeal issued last week.

Now, we can be quite certain if a woman had been so gravely wronged by the State in some matter relating to sexual crime, that the feminist sirens, media and quangos alike, would have been howling in anger, and demanding enquiries and heads. But in the aftermath of this case, nothing: the sirens remained as quiet as a mountain lake. For the victim is a man, so really, the injustice done to him really doesn’t count. Not in 1997, not today, and no doubt, not in 2019 either.

The laws framed by me would definitely be much better than ones introduced by the stupid, derailed and prejudiced minds of the feminists. They would definitely be not aimed at creating permanent rift or divisive tendencies or deep hatred between men and enemy. They will definitely be not intended at creating women NATURAL ENEMY of man or vice versa. Lastly, they will be intended at creating deep and natural intimacy between them so that this nation’s legacies, values, traditions and institutions remain intact.

Here is Rohan’s list of rights he would allow women, the Taliban list.

1- Complete ban on women’s work outside the home, which also applies to female teachers, engineers and most professionals. Only a few female doctors and nurses are allowed to work in some hospitals in Kabul.

2- Complete ban on women’s activity outside the home unless accompanied by a mahram (close male relative such as a father, brother or husband).

3- Ban on women dealing with male shopkeepers.

4- Ban on women being treated by male doctors.

5- Ban on women studying at schools, universities or any other educational institution. (Taliban have converted girls’ schools into religious seminaries.)

6- Requirement that women wear a long veil (Burqa), which covers them from head to toe.

7- Whipping, beating and verbal abuse of women not clothed in accordance with Taliban rules, or of women unaccompanied by a mahram.

8- Whipping of women in public for having non-covered ankles.

9- Public stoning of women accused of having sex outside marriage. (A number of lovers are stoned to death under this rule).

10- Ban on the use of cosmetics. (Many women with painted nails have had fingers cut off).

11- Ban on women talking or shaking hands with non-mahram males.

12- Ban on women laughing loudly. (No stranger should hear a woman’s voice).

13- Ban on women wearing high heel shoes, which would produce sound while walking. (A man must not hear a woman’s footsteps.)

14- Ban on women riding in a taxi without a mahram.

15- Ban on women’s presence in radio, television or public gatherings of any kind.

16- Ban on women playing sports or entering a sport center or club.

17- Ban on women riding bicycles or motorcycles, even with their mahrams.

18- Ban on women’s wearing brightly colored clothes. In Taliban terms, these are ”sexually attracting colors.”

19- Ban on women gathering for festive occasions such as the Eids, or for any recreational purpose.

20- Ban on women washing clothes next to rivers or in a public place.

21- Modification of all place names including the word ”women.” For example, ”women’s garden” has been renamed ”spring garden”.

22- Ban on women appearing on the balconies of their apartments or houses.

23- Compulsory painting of all windows, so women can not be seen from outside their homes.

24- Ban on male tailors taking women’s measurements or sewing women’s clothes.

25- Ban on female public baths.

26- Ban on males and females traveling on the same bus. Public buses have now been designated ”males only” (or ”females only”).

27- Ban on flared (wide) pant-legs, even under a burqa.

28- Ban on the photographing or filming of women.

29- Ban on women’s pictures printed in newspapers and books, or hung on the walls of houses and shops.

Apart from the above restrictions on women, the Taliban has:

- Banned listening to music, not only for women but men as well.

- Banned the watching of movies, television and videos, for everyone.

- Banned celebrating the traditional new year (Nowroz) on March 21. The Taliban has proclaimed the holiday un-Islamic.

I mourn your loss of humanity Rohan.

Well, that is heartening to know. For a moment there I was afraid that we had lost you to the Taliban as well.

I should have known better though, you seem too well educated to fall for such a savage ideology.

You know, when you talk of removing all of women’s rights and sending back to the subjugation of times past, you are not talking about something that would affect the so called feminists.

Wealthy women didn’t have to play by those rules, they had education, art, music, travel and opportunity, they had men, fathers/husbands who doted on them and indulged them.

The yolk of oppression sits squarely on the shoulders of poor women. You might think that you are no better off now because of women’s rights, but the hope that it gives to poor women is invaluable. The hope that they too can one day escape the dreary, soul crushing bonds of poverty. Even women who choose to stay home and raise children need an education.

Imagine your life if you could not read or write. How complicated would it make everyday life? How humiliating would it be if you had to ask your 6 year old to read a notice that came in the mail? How empty and colorless would your life be if all you could learn is what came in the form of soap operas on TV? How bitter would you be if your friends got to go to the movies and go on holiday but you could never leave your street?

I know what I am talking about, that is the life I escaped from. I was that 6 year old kid, opening the mail and reading it to my mother. I was 12 years old when I started driving to the store because the factory where my father worked exploded and he had to go away for 4 months. I know exactly how bitter women get when they have no options, it was all around me. House after house of women with kids and nothing to do but gossip and argue.
Of all people, you would have thought my mother would have wanted something better for her only daughter, but no, her advice to me was ”Don’t spend so much in the books, boys don’t like smart girls and you do want to get married someday, don’t you?”

That is tradition, get married and some man will take care of you. What if he doesn’t? What if he is cruel? What if he gets injured and cannot work? What if he runs off with another woman? What if he dies? That is the uncertainty you would have to live with every day of your life. If you had never known anything else, would you have the courage or the skills to survive?

What percentage of women and children live in poverty in your country? It is currently around 15% here. It was at around 55% in the 1950s, before the rights movements, rights for minorities including women.
