As my daily routine starts and my day has to start with a cup of hot green tea and news paper. Every day I get to read at least four to five incidents happen to women.
I happen to think every day while reading paper in the morning. Is my city safe for me? Am I safe with my friend, boss, doctor or am I safe while returning home late night?
Finally, the question is am I safe being a Women? Kids between the age of 4-5 are not safe, girls are not safe, women are not safe. Single women, married women, independent and working women not safe and horrible part is old women are not safe. What reasons are related to the abuses on women?
“Man kills his wife after she refuses to have physical relationship with him and later had intercourse with her corpse” – Chennai-PTI. “A skin specialist lures a women by promising her for curing a skin ailment and rapes her for two and a half year, by threatening her that he would circulate her nude photos” – Mumbai.
These are some of the instances which happened in India and there are worst cases happened in other parts of the country, Britain experienced the worst case where a father raped his daughter for 25 years and fathered her with 7 children. And in other instance a 64-year-old junk dealer had allegedly raped his daughter, now 34, regularly since she was nine years old.
Mangalore witnessed abuse on women for wearing modern clothes like denim and t-shirt. A girl was pulled out of a pub and trashed by a man. A girl in Bangalore also witnessed a similar situation after the incident happened in Mangalore, however she escaped without injuries.
In which instance a women is safe? Where is the constitution of law? What are the police officers doing? After all this all the women would just survive with one question in mind.
Am I safe in my own house? Will I be safe with my husband? These instances and abuses on women make me helplessly remind the stories of seventies and eighties from my grandmother saying “A girl child born is always not a good sign, it is always a sign of mourning”.
The mothers of the culprits defended their sons by saying "its not a big deal if a girl is raped". I could not believe my ears, a woman saying that.
Not just men, even women are to be equally blamed for the bad state of women in our country.
I agree with all of what you wrote here. It is a bitter pill but it is the truth. My point of concern is what exactly is the solution to this huge problem?
In my opinion, the problem lies in the way of upbringing our offspring. I mean that parents specially mothers should teach their children(in this case boys) to cultivate respect for the fairer sex. This sounds easy but it is not followed in our society.
If a young child(boy) is taught to give respect to other children(girls) of the family and outside, then this problem can be cured. Normally, in our society it is seen that girls are not treated equally from the beginning and not just by the male members but their mothers and female members as well. This has to be changed for a healthier and more civilized society and culture.
I don’t know whether I am able to convey my message, but I am sure this is a fool-proof solution.
Giving respect to a fairer sex is a good thing and can help but until we don’t change our attitude towards girls we can’t get the final solution. We have to address the cause of the problem which lies in our social set up and values imparted to us.
...all we can do is learn to protect ourselves from these kind of incidents and teach our children to be strong in any given situation.. and become responsible individuals..
