This is a shrinking world, as far as the eye is concerned. From the days of an early man till today when we need to differentiate between 8 and 6 on the computer screen , the eye’s are not doing so great.
This century the baby is born with the mentality to watch T.V, play games on Computer. Today, between 10-20% of urban Indian children are Myopic.
The eyes are among the most self sufficient organs in the human body. Unfortunately, they are also inordinately delicate and constant exposure to hazardous situations, smoky polluted atmosphere, global warming, computer, late night shifts and improper sleep. Over the last few years there has been an epidemic of Ocular Surface Disease in the mega cities, caused quite obviously by the sharp rise in vehicles.
SOLUTION: Controlling pollution is the solution. More specifically avoiding dust. Avoid travelling on a bike at 30Km an hour without eye protection. Glasses or visors on helmets act as barriers and help break this speed (Do we see bike riders wearing helmet?). Wearing glasses that are covered on the sides to prevent the side current of air from gushing in. Check out the smuggled goods outlets in your city, if you cannot afford for the branded.
Tears are the best eye cleansers, but dust is an insidious thing that you cannot always blink away. Natural tears are the best eye cleansers, its because they contain sodium chloride (Common Salt). The cornea is comfortable with a slightly salty solution. Any outside liquids (Like water) are, believe it or not, unwelcome. Tap water usually has some chlorine in it, but lot of pollutants as well!
Ophthalmologists recommend LUBRICANTS for the eye (Better known as artificial ‘tears’, which is of a great demand by the daily soap actors). They flush out the dust from the eye, replacing some of the lost moisture. Since lubricants are bland and completely non-interactive with the eye, you can also use them safely and as many times.
IF something is irritating your eye, DON’T blow into it. Dust particles in the eye are infinitely preferable to the bacteria in someone’s breath and rubbing your eyes isn’t a great thing either. Chances are some dust particle will scratch the eyeball and cause permanent damage. Instead blink rapidly and frequently, till the irritant is flushed out. Or use the eye lubricant.
Once the particle is out and you feel good, trying keeping the thin slices of cucumber and rest your eyes for ten minutes and free those beautiful Twins.
